Looking to land a job in finance? This isn’t the first time CyberCoders has pulled back the curtain on what employees are really looking for (for example, check out
this breakdown of the most in-demand skills for software engineers). They’re dedicated to making it easy for job seekers to find exactly the job they’re looking for and for helping companies hire the absolute best talent, as quickly and easily as possible. And believe me, the information I’m about to share will definitely help you get noticed for the job you want. Below is a look at three things you’ll want to know if you’re planning to apply for a job in finance.
#1. The top financial job titles
What are the most common finance jobs being posted to CyberCoders? Here is a look at the Top 10:
- Tax Manager
- DE Underwriter
- Audit Senior
- Audit Manager
- Tax Senior
- Controller
- Senior Accountant
- DE Mortgage Underwriter
- Mortgage Processor
- Senior Auditor
Tax manager was the most common job title posted to CyberCoders by a long shot, with DE underwriter also well ahead of the rest of the pack. If these are jobs you feel especially qualified, you’re in luck. Not included in this list are additional popular job titles like “Accounting Manager,” “Staff Accountant,” and “Financial Analyst.”
#2. In-demand skills to include on your resume
Looking for the perfect mix of skills that just about every employer out there seems to be looking for? Here is a look at the top finance skills to include on your resume:
- CPA
- Public Accounting
- FHA
- GAAP
- VA
- Direct Endorsement
- Underwriting
- Corporate Tax
- Tax Planning
- Conventional
It should come as no surprise that CPA’s are in high demand, but you may not have expected to see skills like GAAP and VA included in the list of most popular skills. This means that if you’ve got expertise in these areas, be sure to highlight them on your resume. Also in demand are skills like auditing, accounting, and financial reporting.
#3. Busiest – and least busy – times for hiring
Have you ever been looking for a job and it just didn’t seem like anyone was hiring? Or have you ever felt like you were going up against about a million other applicants? Here is a look at which months of the year are the most competitive, and which are the least, to keep you in the know:
Most Competitive
- November
- April
- September
Least Competitive
- February
- January
- March
It should come as no surprise, but job applications in finance spike during the two months before college graduation (November and April, respectively.) If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, be sure to apply early in the year when others are either finishing their schooling or simply not looking to make a change. Each of those first three months will afford you significantly less competition than during the summer months and the fall. So there you have it. This should give you all of the information you need to snipe your next job application with the right timing, the right resume, and the right skills on display!
