The U.S. unemployment rate is at its lowest level since 1999. That’s great news for those who have struggled to find work.
While many fields are growing, some are growing at a faster rate than others. Meaning, those searching for the greatest chance of employment should target industries and professions with the strongest growth rate.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these five professions are projected to be the fastest growing jobs over the next 10 years.
1. Solar Photovoltaic Installers
Solar photovoltaic (PV) installer positions are expected to grow at an outstanding rate of 105 percent over the next 10 years. Solar PV installers are responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining solar panel systems on residential rooftops and other structures. With a growing interest in renewable (and affordable) energy solutions, coupled with innovations by companies like Vivant Solar and Solar City, it’s no surprise the demand for Solar PV installers is so high.
In 2018, Solar PV installers make an average of $39,490 per year.
2. Wind Turbine Service Technicians
As mentioned above, there is a growing need and desire for natural and renewable energy sources. Along with solar energy, governments across the United States are making
greater use of wind power. There is a high demand for technicians to install and service these wind turbines to ensure they function properly.
Wind turbine technicians make a medium income of around $53,880 in 2018.
3. Home Health Aides and Personal Care Aides
The largest demographic by population in the United States ranges from 45 to 55. As both baby boomers and Generation X retire and advance in years, there is a significant need for home health aides to take care of them. Home health aides and personal care aides provide additional care and support that hospital and clinics are not capable of. These aides assist people who have chronic illnesses, disabilities, or other impediments in their daily lives.
Home health and personal care aides make an average of $23,130 per year in 2018.
4. Physician Assistants
The medical field is always in need of top-notch talent. And fortunately for job seekers, the demand far outweighs the current supply. Physical assistants (PAs) work under the supervision of physicians, surgeons, and other health care workers to examine, diagnose, and treat patients.
The average PA makes about $104,860 per year in 2018. However, the bigger paycheck requires greater schooling. Typical entry-level PA positions require a master’s degree from an accredited program. In addition, all PAs must be licensed to practice medicine in their particular state.
5. Nurse Practitioners
As mentioned earlier, there is plenty of help required for the growing needs of the health care industry. As more and more people advance in years, there must be a corresponding supply of professionals to care for them. Nurse anesthetists and nurse practitioners, also called
advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are responsible for coordinating patient care and providing primary and specialty health care.
The median annual salary is around $110,930 for APRNs. Also, like PAs, there is a stronger requirement for additional education. APRNs must earn at least a master’s degree, be licensed in their state, and pass a national certification exam.
