The World Health Organization estimates that around 16% of the world’s population—or 1.3 billion people—is experiencing significant disability, and those numbers are expected to rise for a variety of reasons.
Are all those people out of work? No! But there’s no sugarcoating the fact that candidates with disabilities face more challenges than the average job seeker.
To give yourself an edge in the job market as a person with disabilities with a lot to offer, check out these tips.
Know your rights
You deserve the same opportunities as any other candidate.
Under the ADA, prospective employers cannot ask you disability-related questions unless your disability is obvious or if you willingly discuss it.
Then, once you’re hired, the company must provide reasonable accommodation allowing you to perform your duties, and they should not deny you the same growth opportunities as your colleagues.
As with any other kind of harassment, if you are unfairly treated due to your disability, you are entitled to make a complaint without fear of retaliation.
Find relevant resources
Did you know there are employment organizations specifically catering to disabled persons, both private and governmental?
There are also several terrific resources where you can find companies with a great track record of hiring those with disabilities.
And, of course, the best recruiting firms will make a special commitment to reasonably accommodating individuals of all abilities.
Let yourself shine
Find the best job for you: By now, you know your proficiencies and limitations. Look for jobs that offer the flexibility you need to be at your best.
Focus on your achievements: Don’t hide the fact that you have disabilities, but if your condition won’t impede your performance in a particular job, then there’s no need to even bring it up. If there are any job functions you’ll need accommodations for, briefly disclose them, but keep the focus on the positive results you’ve been able to deliver to prior employers.
Remember, you are strong and resilient. Go into the recruitment process with that confidence, and you’re likely to come up with a job that you’ve always wanted.
